Kosteaa ja kuumaa. Äänekkäitä kaskaita, pitkäpyrstöisiä mustia lintuja ja voimakas, trooppinen tuoksu. 23 tuntia bussissa, sattumalta löydetty hyvä iltapalasushipaikka ja motellin valtava sänky. Seuraavaksi yöksi varattu hostelli joen rannalla, bussi downtowniin ja kävelyä ympäriinsä.

When walking around I started to feel hungry. It was already past lunchtime but in this country where you can have breakfast for dinner it doesn't really matter. I went searching for a place that would serve food and possibly have a terrace since the weather was nice and sunny. I saw a bar that was packed and went in. I asked if they would still serve lunch. "Oh, we're bringing the buffet out shortly.", said the bartender. I was puzzled. I ordered a drink and handed the bartender a ten dollar note to pay for it. It was her time to look puzzled. It turned out that I had walked into a party with an open bar for people that organize a big annual festival called South by Southwest. "It's not a private party so feel free to stay.", she then said. If only I would've taken the money out a little more slowly.. I ordered a shrimp salad. A guy walked to me and noticed my plate that obviously wasn't from their buffet. He asked if I was at least drinking on their tab. I said I wasn't and he laughed. He told me about a party that would be on the same night. Although far away and in a sketchy area it would be worth going to. I promised to think about it.
I left and went to have a coffee in a nearby coffee shop. All the tables on the patio were full so I asked to share a table with a guy who seemed to be leaving. Well, he was leaving but just to take his laptop to his car and asked me to save him a seat. He came back and we started talking. Although I was a stranger, he told me all about his jealous ex-boyfriend who was causing him trouble in his hometown. We talked for almost three hours, about gay rights, politics and relationships. And Harry Potter. Afterwards I headed back to the hostel but stopped by a small mexican restaurant to get food. This place was near the hostel and I noticed a girl there whom I thought I had seen at the hostel earlier. She wasn't the same girl but nevertheless we started talking while waiting for our orders. I told her about the party. She had never heard of it but got excited and we decided to go there together. She would be driving and came to pick me up from the hostel. Meredith and I had a great time, the band was awesome and I even bumped into the guy whom I had met earlier. Frank promised to show me around town the next day since it was my last day and I would be heading to New Orleans next. Such great randomness. Thank you Austin!
